Frank Neese, Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts für chemische Energiekonversion, Mülheim an der Ruhr, ist zum Honorarprofessor für Theoretische Chemie der Universität Bonn ernannt worden.
Dr. Immanuel Gadaczek erhält den "Geheimrat Dr. ter-Meer-Preis" 2013 der Universitätsgesellschaft Bonn.
Der Artikel "Estimating the Hydrogen Bond Energy" von Katharina Wendler, Jens Thar, Stefan Zahn und Barbara Kirchner (DOI: 10.1021/jp103470e) ist einer der meist gelesenen Artikel im Jahr 2012 des Journals of Physical Chemistry A.
Für seine herausragende Arbeiten auf dem Gebiet der ab initio und Dichtefunktionalmethoden großer Moleküle bekommt Prof. Stefan Grimme die WATOC 2013 Schrödinger Medaille.
Dr. Andreas Hansen wurde am 7.12.2012 der "Ernst-Haage-Preis für Doktoranden 2012" verliehen.
Prof. Barabara Kirchner von der Universität Leipzig nahm zum Januar 2013 den Ruf als W3 Professorin für Theoretische Chemie an.

The Mulliken center presently consists of three subgroups (Grimme, Kirchner, Bredow) conducting basic research in quantum chemistry. Prof. Peyerimhoff as the former chair of theoretical chemistry is still active as professor emeritus. Consequently, there is a rather wide variety of research topics and methods that are partly pursued in close collaboration with experimental or other theoretical groups. The main activities are:

Ab initio quantum chemistry.
Density functional theory.
Dispersion corrections and non-covalent interactions
Theoretical optical spectroscopy (absorption, CD, vibrational structure).
Theoretical thermochemistry.
Reaction mechanisms in organic and organometallic chemistry.
Quantum cluster equilibrium model.
Ab initio and traditional molecular dynamics simulations.
Solvents and solvent effects.
Development of tool for analyzing and visualizing trajectories.
Theoretical solid state chemistry (cyclic cluster model, CCM).
Semi-empirical quantum chemistry (MSINDO).
